Yesterday we held our Lottery/Drawing party to choose artists for the festival in January. We used our complicated scientific process of drawing names from a hat, as we have done every year. This year was slightly different from previous years. We have over 60 applicants; a new record for Tucson Fringe. Last year we had 42 applicants, so this is a huge leap for us. Sadly, with a 30% increase in applicants, we could not increase the number of performers chosen by 30%. We have increased the number of performers from 20 to 25 this year. We hope to add more as we continue to grow.
We broke another record for the Tucson Fringe this year with the number of applicants from our home town, Tucson. It should be made clear, at this time we do not favor local artists over out of town artists. Everyone has the same opportunity and chances of having their name drawn from the hat. To give a little more insight, our board and volunteers who have not submitted a show to the festival take turns drawing names. Once we have our list of performers, we then draw names for a wait list in case artists from the first list decide not to attend our festival.
Many artists are waiting to hear if their show was chosen. Everyone who was chosen will be contacted within the next couple days with a performance agreement. This agreement will detail deadlines for payments and press materials. We posted a live Facebook video of the drawing party, so if you cannot wait for the email, check out the video. Artists are not officially apart of the festival until agreements are signed and payments have been cleared. Once details are finalized, we will announce the official lineup for the 8thTucson Fringe Festival in January 2019.
We hope the artists who were not chosen will apply again next year. As stated previously, we had more applicants than ever before this year and we wish we could produce all your shows. You can help us continue to grow by spreading the word. Tell all your friends and family about our little festival in the desert. We are the only fringe festival in the State of Arizona. If you don’t already, please like and follow us on all the social medias. Our handle is @tucsonfringe.
