Given 4 stars and picked Best of Fringe by DC Theatre Arts, the play has been called a “tribute to the comedy gods.”

Created by Scott Cohen
San Francisco, CA
Historic Y 2nd Floor Lobby – Sat, Jan 10, 7pm and Sun, Jan 11, 2pm and 6:30pm.
Eccentric grandparents played a significant role in Scott’s childhood development. In this unapologetically nostalgic piece, he revisits memories from days gone by in the form of two stories. The first focuses on the centrality of black & white television and his grandfather’s love for it, the second on his grandmother’s unconventional views regarding the relative nature of time. Although Scott thinks he is just a narrator telling funny stories from long ago, he discovers that the border separating the past from the present is not so clearly marked.

Comedienne Lucille Ball captured the hearts of television audiences across the nation in the 1950s. Her wacky hijinks and plucky enthusiasm kept thousands laughing. Offscreen, she and real-life husband Desi Arnaz ran their own studio and broke new ground in television technologies. But what does it mean when a TV star’s on-screen legend clashes with her off-screen reality? In this biopic play, historian and actress Leslie Goddard brings Lucy to life, paying tribute to both the comic legend and the actual woman behind the myth.

This performance explores the cultural phenomenon that was the early 2000s emo/pop-punk scene and what it means to grow up alongside the music you love. Starting with her experiences as a high schooler on the fringes of the New Jersey scene and ending with questions about what it means to now be an “elder emo,” the performer weaves together her personal narratives and the lessons she’s learned to demonstrate that it has always been more than “just a phase.”

‘More Porridge’ asks whether Johnson’s War on Poverty was truly any better than England’s Victorian workhouses. The United Kingdom’s New Poor Law designed foul spaces to deter the poor from seeking food or housing. More than a century after Dicken’s workhouses ignominiously disappeared, America’s War on Poverty remains tainted by long-term harm from equally inhumane policies. Can we discuss how to support the unhoused, the poor, and the nutritionally deficient in the United States today? How can we give both Oliver Twist and Olivia Johnson more than a second helping of thin gruel?
