It’s that time of year in Tucson where everyone runs and hides from the sun and prepares for the coming winter months. There isn’t much fall weather in Tucson. We just skip over to winter. Even the Fringe Festival starts preparations for the glorious cooler weather in the Old Pueblo. Applications for the 2019 Tucson Fringe Theater Festival will open next week on July 1. The application fee is $15. The next festival will be January 11, 12, and 13, 2019. Applications will remain open until September 1, 2018. Around mid-September, we will announce the artists for the 2019 Tucson Fringe Theater Festival.
How Do You Choose Artists?
Tucson Fringe is an unjuried, uncensored festival. When choosing artists for the festival, we have a complicated system of sequences, completely supported by both science and religion…we literally draw names out of a hat! This allows us to maintain a fair and objective view of which artists are chosen for the festival. After we have filled all the open spots, we the draw artists out of the hat for an overflow list. Each year, one or two artists may cancel because they cannot attend our festival, so we pull from that overflow list to fill the spot.
Do I Have to Live in Tucson to Apply?
Absolutely not! If you’re new to the Fringe world, many artists are usually from out of town. We will, of course, encourage Tucson locals to apply, but their show will also be subject to the super scientific “name drawing from hat” criteria. There is no special privilege for being an out-of-town artist versus a local artist. We also encourage people of underrepresented backgrounds in theater to apply (women, people of color, LGBTQIA+, people with disabilities, etc…). We will do our best to find out-of-town artists a place to stay during their time in Tucson; however, at this time we cannot provide financial assistance.
If you reside in Tucson, we are currently seeking new board members and anyone willing to help house out-of-town artists. Can they crash on your couch for that weekend? If you have any questions, comments, or concerns, you can visit our Contact page. Like and follow us on social media; Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. The biggest thing you can do to help the Fringe is tell your friends about us. It cost you nothing and helps us grow and create a better world through art and self-expression.
